Only 15 years ago now...we only had stick shifts so I had to learn how to drive one if I was going to drive the car my parents had for me to drive. It was me a my Dad and I was very comfortable driving at this point and actually had my license (thru High School program). He explain the concept of how the clutch worked (I knew from driving other clutch type vehicles) and that helped. Still for some reason I had a hard time the first time out on the road and in the parking lot (sounds just like your first experience). At that point my Dad was a bit frustrated (and he is a perfectionist) and I was frustrated. Finally after a lot of stress on the subject my Dad said the heck with it and just let me drive by myself...he was no where in sight and guess what....zero problems.
Short story - I am sure 90% of your sons issue is trying to please you. If you can just somehow let him be on his own, without having to worry about your critique, I bet it will all come together. At least it did for me. Now I cringe at the thought of ever owning an automatic.
Good Luck. Let us know what you do. I have a little less that 13 years to face this problem with my son.
