9-5 / 9-3

I too felt the 9-3ss was a let down compared to my 02' 9-5 when I first drove one. But, I've driven one twice again and it actually is a pretty great little car. It's nimble, it's sporty, it's clean, it's fun... Meaning, that it is aimed at a different market than the 9-5. The 9-5 is all of those things, too, but also looks more stately or more 'something' (sedated looks? clubby attitude?) next to the 9-3, and I don't think this is just an issue of the new model vs. old model. Meaning, I think Saab really meant to make a 'young' person's car, in a way that they didn't plan on doing with the 9-5, and I think they have really succeeded in doing so. In Chicago I have seen ONLY twenty-something guys and girls in the 9-3SS in the trendier neighborhoods or on the daily commute down I90. Comapre this with the 9-5 Chicago drivers--I'm 31, and I have seen a few other early 30s drivers, but mostly lots and lots of 40s and 50s drivers. It's a different market. Even my Mercedes' only driving parents, in their later 50s, commented to me about my 9-5 when we took a short road trip to Milwaukee, "This was a sensible buy for you". Nothing like unwittingly that to make me feel like I've joined their club. But, you know, 20 somethings and up a bit don't necessarily want to 'join' 'that' 'club'. And, well, gosh, that 36 month $299 lease with $999 down is pretty amazing when I compare it to the price of my 9-5.
