With a little "massaging", the AA (Auto' Aero) can be as quick, if not
quicker, than the 5 speed version. Turbo's and automatics are a match
made in heaven: the power is completely seamless because there's no
waiting for spool-up when the throttle closes between shifts. Of course,
there's a reason why Saab doesn't put the high torque engine on the automatics - the auto box is a weak-point, torque-wise. However, with
careful maintenance (change the ATF every year/15k miles), and judicious
application of power (don't keep the gas pedal 'mashed' during upshifts,
I think the mortality rate of the slush-box would increase. JJ, a
knowledgeable contributor on the 9000 BB, has an AAA (automatic-abbott-aero) that recently got dynoed at more than the stock 225 hp. I've rode
in his car, and the automatic does wonders mated to the turbo - it's a
real rocket-sled! It's probably faster than my 9000, which dynoed to
about 265 hp @ the wheels, from 0-60.
