Most detailing information will tell you that you should always start out easy, begin with the least abrasive products and work your way backwards to more agressive products in the event that you are not satisfied. The only true way to eliminate or remove swirls is with a rotary buffer (not random orbital)these buffers actually heat up the surface and fill in the blemishes. These machines are costly and I would not suggest it if you have not used one before (easy to burn the paint). A random orbital machine is idiot proof and "hides" swirl marks. There are many different types of polishing products out there to use which vary in their degree of abrasiveness...again start out easy. The Blackfire products did a great job on my black 9-5, I needed nothing more agressive.
http://www.griotsgarage.com has several polishes rated 1,2,3 to tackle most situations, also the pad that you use will make a difference as well. Wool pads have the most cutting ability, again I would use that as a last resort. Check http://www.properautocare.com or griots for details on proper auto detailing and the products to use. Meguiars also has a nice selection.
I enjoy the process, it's not "work" for me, I spent a couple bucks for the equipment and would prefer to do it myself. Hope this helps.
