when it comes to cost of ownership. The cost to repair also factors in. Generally, Saab parts are going to cost a whole lot more than those of the more mainstream Japanese cars. And, from what I gather here, Saab dealers aren't too shy when it comes to labor charges.
However, I agree that Saabs are every bit as reliable as their Japanese counterparts & maybe moreso.
So RC, I have a '99 SE with the 2.3lpt, and am quite happy with it. Though it is advertised as having a 170hp motor, it is really 185 according to dyno tests. Saab must have deliberately under-rated it to make it more affordable to buy insurance. I've been told 170 hp is some sort of cut-off for rate structures, and someone said drivers licensing in European countries is harder to get for higher power engines.
The 2.3lpt is a traditional Saab powerplant. Some advantages are: Lower fuel consumption; weighs less; uses a timing chain v. belt; smaller, so it leaves a bit more room in the engine compartment when you want to work on it; has lots of options for future performance upagrade; fewer moving parts -so inherently more reliable.
I'm sure others can supply a list of advantages relating to the V6 as well.
