I just did this yesterday using a $20, 4000 lb. capacity floor jack I got on sale at WalMart.. when lifting a car I usually use the same jacking points you would use when changing a flat tire. If you look under the car you'll see a metal ridge with a notched part, you can lift the car at that point. No adapter needed.
Don't ever place the jack under suspension components; some cars use aluminum suspension parts which might be easily damaged.

ps- i'll repeat what others have written, do not ever get underneath a car which isn't supported by jack stands!! or if you're not doing wheel/brake work, you can use a pair of rhino ramps and wheel chocks.
