Hi Joel,
Am I correct in assuming that by the "lightshield/reflector" you mean the cylindrical steel "sleeve" that surrounds the bulb in the headlight unit?
If that is the case, then no, I did not remove it- that would have been far more work- and I think that's important for two reasons:
1. I think that shield stops stray light rays from messing up the beam pattern. By blocking the radiant light from the bulb, light can only travel through the focal point of the reflector. When light rays travel through the focal point of a parabola (the reflector), the angle of refraction will always result in a direction parallel to a line drawn from the focal point to the apex (aiming line).
2. I think that might also protect the reflector from some of the heat generated by the bulb (or capsule in our case)
Now, since you're the only other one here I'm aware of whom has completed this modification, here's my questions for you:
1. Which kit did you get?
2. Where did you mount your ballasts and starters?
3. Did you do both High and low beams, or just the lows like I did?
4. Are you happy with it so far? I'm quite pleased with mine.
Email me if you'd like more specific details as to how I installed mine, or if you'd like to share some ideas about the installation and how to improve it. I could take some pics of my installation and send them also if you like.
