I've attended a lot of MTB races, and the racers invariably use fork mounts for their high-priced bikes. Not sure why, but this was my son's choice for us too (he's a serious racer; I'm a casual one). We've driven many thousands of miles with bikes on top with no problems, other than a stolen wheel (I neglected to lock it into its separate mount). Now we carry front wheels inside. Denting the roof is a definite risk; you have to be careful and hold onto those front forks while setting them into position to lock. I've never had this happen, though. With either type you have to remember the bikes are up there and not drive into garages, etc.! Also, the upright type that grips the downtube of the bike won't work for many aluminum and full-suspension bikes (come to think of it, maybe this explains why the racers don't use this type).
