At higher altitudes they don't have higher octane, it all lower. This is because the normally asperated engines don't need the octane with the thin air. If you have a turbo charged engine, you are stuck with low octane. So when in the mountains, you need the highest octane availalbe at the pump, but it might be quite low compared to the gas that the flat landers get.
