Per Eklund, of Sweden, was onboard.
Also 9000 Saabs (predecessor to the 9-5) currently hold the Tallendega track record for continuous running at high speed.
Back throught the mid-80s, I ran an early Saab 900 turbo; a '79. Although I blew $2.25 rubber diaphragms (they dried out and tended to crack) with some frequency and the exhaust manifold couldn't take the heat, the turbo itself was bulletproof. There were a lot of miles on this unit. I balanced the turbo shaft and blades once. Since turbos are in wide use in the natural gas transmission systems, balancing a turbo locally was a $75 job.
These days, you hear nothing of exhaust problems caused by heat on any of these boards and rarely are there turbo failures; even burst diaphragms are a thing of the past.
In those days, American cars were doggish while Sabb was fast and proving the turbo for the future. The 9-5 turbo is the product of a lot of years roadwork; not a one-off.
Right around the corner we have the variable compression engine (30% less fuel and emissions with all the power).
Sabb engines are noted for longetivity. Somewhere on this site, we have the proof of it.
