Techron is a strong dose of what Chevron adds to their pump gas to combat injector and combustion chamber deposits. You do need such things. If you had expectations that you could run your vehicle without ever adding something to the fuel you are greatly mistaken. You must use something to clean the injectors. If you don't use something that will tackle carbon deposits you get hot spots and aquired octane demand. The increaed octane demand then will cause the ECU to detune the ignition timing and perhaps go to more fuel enrichment when on throttle which makes the deposits worse. You can also then have the ECU reducing boost to avoid knocking.
Severe injector fouling can lead to differing AF ratios across the cylinders, remember that the O2 sensor loop will average these out, not deal with each cylinder. A bad spray pattern that wets the cylinder walls will cause severe ring wear.
I use Techron every 8K or 3 times per year. I did find that my 03 Areo ran better with its first Techron treatment.
