I just did the weatherstripping foam fix last night (about 10 lines on the SID were out, making it a real pain to read). I placed foam on both sides of the white flexible contact strip, so that when the whole assembly went back into the black case, it fit very tightly. All the pixels now come up perfectly!
The only remaining problem is that the second digit in the clock fades away intermittently in damp weather. But I can live with that.
Several posters here have said that it takes time for everything to come back on. Others have said that you can use simple crazy-glue to glue down the strip. That might be the next thing I try, although I am leaning towards leaving well enough alone. It doesn't seem like the strip's looseness is the problem, it is the contact of the strip's ends with the circuit board in the display. So I don't really see how gluing it would help, but that's just my take on it.
Now I can see what track the CD is on and what the outside temp is! Pretty thrilling ;-)
