Saab windshields -- what to do?

I have a '97 9000 with 135,000 miles on it...and a new '01 9-5. 80% of my driving is weekly between Maine and Connecticut (at 30 days the 9-5 has 4,500 miles on it). I replaced the windshield on the 9000 at 70,000 miles because it had become badly sandblasted...and it is ready for a new one again. And when the sun hit the windshield on my 9-5 after three weeks, I could already see the first small pits!
Am I mistaken, or is the surface of these windshields unusually prone to this type of damage? I have had Sekurit glass on various VWs and have not see the same damage. (The only comparable damage I have seen was on my wife's '95 Montero...but that windshield was damn near vertical...and the rest of the truck had the aerodynamics of your average refrigerator).
While I like RainX on side windows, mirrors, and lights...I don't like to use it on windshields...and I wouldn't think that would offer any real protection. And while I have thought about the self adhesive laminates for my headlights and foglights, I doubt that would be cost effective or satisfactory on a windshield.
Any other suggestions other than a big blue plexi bug guard pop riveted to my hood? <g>
