So I did my second oil change today, with the free maintenance Saab 5W30 and filter from the dealer. I told them that I wanted to do the changes myself because:

I have the super dooper rare earth oil drain plug magnet, and I did not want some guy busting it. Hmm, big stainless head, 7/8", got to figure out what that is, out it comes, whack! it pulls his hand to the nearest chunk of steel. Next step would be playing with it and the magnet has enough energy to destroy itself in such impacts. So after it was noticed that the magnet was getting destroyed, then they would just put it back and not say a word.

So I lost a lot of sleep about using a 3W30 semi after M1 0W30, but this oil got some good technical reviews. So I open a bottle of this Saab oil, and give it a sniff. Now this is some serious oil. It has a smell that tells you that it is serious stuff. So there is my highly accurate technical analysis :)

So this the first time that this magnet has come out. It had a small steel burr on it, looks like a cutting from some tapped threads. And it had quite a bit of fine black magnetic stuff on it. So it was doing its job on this engine that is just getting past green at 12,700. With the black residue wiped onto a paper towel, and holding that up to the sun light, you can really see the deposit from the shadow side. And with the biggest smudge, I found that the magnet was quite attracted to that and it was almost able to hold the weight of the towel from the magnetic attraction. So the magnet was doing its job, grabbing larger bits so that they do not go through the oil pump to the filter, and grabbing much of the small wear metals from the cams, followers, rings, cylinder walls etc. These are tyically so small that a full flow oil filter cannot take these out of circulation. They can recirculate and as they are around the size as the lubrication film thicknesses, these hard particles can create wear and they can release more wear metal particles. The magnet will not put aluminum or stuff form shell bearings out of the oil, but those bits are not hard like the iron and steel particles. All of this was with a bit over 4,000 miles on M1 0W40 and a PureOne filter.

Such wear, while being a worry, it typical of a new engine. After things 'wear in', the production of this stuff tapers off greatly. And if a strong magnet is used with a mature engine for the first time, the first time that it comes out it will have more than it will have again as it has scavanged the bits that have been in circulation for some time. The amount of iron on my 95SET was quite small to what I saw today.

Speaking of 'wearing in', my 03 Aero Wagon is really feeling strong these days.
