The biggest difference on the inside, from the sedan, is that you load straight back, istead of around the sedan trunk lip. The 48" table MIGHT fit inside, catty-corner, but if a boat will go on top, so will 3 lawn tables. But the straight back loading(about 60") with a flat tailgate was one of my main incentives for buying the wagon. The 900 hatchback had the flat tailgate but not the squared-off back end - the latter makes a major difference in bulk capacity. The rack (more convenient with Saab-purchased cross bars, but not necessary) has a safe capacity of about 200 lbs.
