I took my '02 manual shift 9-5 Aero sedan in for its 10k service yesterday.

Everything went fine. I had the tires rotated and had to pay $25 for this service. That seems unnecessary. However, they did some Tech II programming for me and didn't charge for that.

At the 30 day service I had asked for the Shift-Up light to be defeated. At that time I was told that it couldn't be done. This time I referenced this list and they obliged, but wouldn't write the action on the service log as they said it was against federal regulations. Is this true? It seems rather odd that there would be a federal regulation requiring a shift-up light on manual shift automobiles. If so, what is the basis for that? Ah, well, I've had it defeated and am very pleased about that. I never did "get used to it". Even after ten months of driving.

I also had the DRLs changed to the Euro mode. This required changing the car to a "German mode" car. I wonder what other implications that has? I now have the small white marker lights (the DRL's!) and the yellow parking lights on with the head lamp switch in the Off position. The halogens come on when you "flash to pass". In the Middle position things are much the same as the Off position except that the floglights can be switched on and the markers stay on when the key is removed. In the On position the Bi-xenons come on.

Also the fog lights can be switched on without the headlights being on (Middle postion). I like this option as it seems the only practical use for fog lights. That is, turn on the fogs and off the headlights when in fog or heavy snow. I've found that if the headlights are on in fog or heavy snow that they pretty much defeat any advantage of the fog lights. Interestingly the fog lights remain on when "flashing" or turning on the high beams. This is in contrast to previous information posted on the list wherein it was stated that the fogs would turn off when the high beams were flashed or turned on. Having the fogs on with the high beams is against US law and can result in a ticket. I'll have to be careful.

Interestingly, after some round-about with the technician, the service manager and I entered the garage to examine the settings and to have me concur that the setup was, in fact, what I wanted. Both the tech and the service manager agreed that this setup was both "nicer looking" and made more sense in regard to preserving the expensive Bi-xenon light bulbs. Though, the tech seemed to think that the bi-xenons would last a "long" time. At $250 a pop (is that right?!) I'd just as soon not run them for every mile driven.

I also had them look at my ACC problems. I've posted previously about ACC problems with the heat. It runs very hot. I am forced to drop the temp setting to 64 or lower in order to be confortable in a t-shirt. I've noticed that the rear vent seems to be the culprit. It runs very hot air all of the time when things start getting warm. Even when I lower the temp. In warmer weather the ACC seems to work fine.

Of course, they could find nothing wrong. I rather expected that and am not terribly concerned at this time given that the air conditioning seems to be working fine. I did want to get it on record, though, as I expect I'll be revisting this problem in the fall. As usual, any thoughts are appreciated.

I had also asked for the temperature gauge dead-band to be removed, but this request seemed to get merged with the heat problem and only served to confuse the technician. Alas, it was not done. Seems that the modern temperature gauge has become an idiot light. What a shame.

Still, after 10k miles I'm even more enamored with this car.

Cheers,
Dave
