After a routine drive this evening that involved mostly highway at 70 mph (15 minutes) followed by a brief cooldown (45 mph for 5 minutes), I popped the hood. The entire engine bay is hot as expected, but seemingly much hotter than I remember my 9-3 being. For example, the cover for the battery was pretty darn toasty to the touch (not so much that I couldn't hold it in my hands, but hot nonetheless).
Here's my theory. The engine bay in general appears to stay cleaner than the bay in my old 9-3. This leads me to conclude that air circulation in the 9-5 is not as efficient as in the 9-3 (which is as designed). Therefore, the bay does not have the opportunity to cool down from standard air flow like the 9-3 did.
Who wants to back me up on this?
A bit of history;
The car is a 99; 9-5 wagon with 59K miles.
The 60K service was recently done.
The thermostat was recently replaced (unsure which thermo was used although the job was done by the dealer)
The engine temp guage is pegged at 9 o'clock at during normal operation.
