I was thinking in terms of bad product destroying a hard earned reputation. It happened to Volkswagen as well as Cadillac. Even though both of those brands now have some strong products, it is an uphill battle for them both.
Since you mentioned the merger, one of the strengths that Mercedes noted about Chrysler was their strong sense of cost control (i.e. being cheap).
However, I don't think the current Mercedes lineup is a product of any Chrysler design/engineering influence. Rather, I think that Mercedes was trying to bring products to market at a price point and kind of forgot about quality.
