I'm sure he does this out of abundant caution. He gave the Audi A6 Quattro 0% in the same category.
The proof of the puddin'......as they say. I can only think it takes a great deal of time, some exceptional engineering, and not a bit of luck, to render a car salable at higher prices when the time comes.
Somehow, rightly or wrongly, Mercedes-Benz has managed to convince a lot of people that their product stands up over time and is worth a premium as a used car. I seem to recall having read somewhere that some time ago, MB made a conscious decision to add about $7K to the price of each of its export cars arbitrarily; to convince people they really were worth that much more. And it worked! Clever Germans.
Jury's still out on the 9-5 and the competition isn't getting any less capable. Hell, New York Times even says Hyundai (a Daimler-Chrysler asset in the long run) has a car that presents valid competition in this range.
But accountants and used car salesmen will tell you that a car is a wasting asset and anyone who buys a new one for personal, not corporate use, needs to have his-her head examined. As if rational thinking had anything to do with it!
