Your O2 sensor could be going. The output voltage could be cycling out of limits from time to time, triggering the CEL. Best to get the code read next time it happens -Any AutoZone will do it for free in the U.S.
If they can't tell you what the code means, a number of us on the board can look it up for you.
If it is an O2 sensor, there isn't any major effect -except somewhat reduced fuel economy. Once the catalytic converter gets up to temperature, the ECU uses oxygen readings from the sensor to adust fuel/air mixtures (not sure if spark advance is affected). When the car first starts or the sensor is bad, the ECU refers to a table of standard settings.
