Ignition Cassette Keeps Going Bad

The ignition cassette on my 2001 9-5 SE (32,000 miles)has been replaced twice in the last 3 months (most recently two weeks ago). On the way home tonight it started showing the same symptoms again - engine light on, won't rev above 2500, running really rough. The only thing missing was the burning electronics smell. The car is being towed in again tomorrow.
The dealer says they have never seen two go on the same car much less three. They say they talked to the master technician and he had no idea what was causing this.
Has anyone had this problem recur and what was causing it? This is getting old and at this point I'm afraid to drive the car more than a few miles at a time.
