I have owned several Lexuses (Lexi?) and had a GS300 immediately prior to my 9-5 SE.
The Camry-based ES300 competes more with the Linear and the Arc at its price point and configuration. The GS300 would compete more with the Aero but the GS is more expensive when you factor in actual selling prices.
Interesting observation regarding refinement. From my point of view, Lexus blows just about everyone away in that department. The powertrains, in particular, set the standard for smoothness and quiet. The interior fit and finish are top quality and the instrument panel visiblity and ergonomics can't be beat. Saab comes close in the ergonomics department, however, and both are miles better than BMW.
Despite being rear wheel drive, the transient handling of the GS is not as good as the Saab (especially the Aero) as it is biased more for comfort.
