Air Conditioner Inoperable AGAIN

Has anyone else had problems with their air conditioning system leaking and loosing its refrigerant?
A couple of months ago (and 500 miles past the expiration of my warranty) the service valve on my A/C leaked. This $2.50 part cost me about $250 to repair at my Saab dealership.
This past week, the A/C is again inoperable. This time, they tell me it's the expansion valve and isn't a "comeback" because it's a different part. This time, they tell me it will be about $650 to repair.
A few questions:
1) This seems pretty unreasonable to me... is this in any way a common problem with 9-5s (mine's a '99 SE V6)
2) Do I have any shot in Hell of getting goodwill assistance from Saab corporate? (I'm the second owner of the car and don't have maintenance records from the previous owner... though I don't know of any maintenance requirements for the air conditioning anyway. I have been going to the dealer for maintenance since I bought the car).
3) Should I tell the dealership to not fix it and have it fixed more inexpensively elsewhere?
Thanks for your advice.
