that it can be extended to the roof with the seat backs folded down, providing a secure area from the front seats all the way to the back.

The net is designed to lock in place, it will not move once installed. The material used is very strong, and I am confident it is as safe or safer than the bars with respects to an accident (I assume the net material will take some of the shock, rather than simply shearing the fasteners on the metal cage with a severe impact load)

The net sits at the top of the back seat, and does not really affect the cargo space with the seat folded up.

I had the same dilema, I chose the net and I don't regret it. The big point for me really was the fact it can still be used with the seats folded down (and still provide passenger protection that is)

Cutting the trim is more work, but its relatively straightforward and took me about an hour to install it in no particular rush.
