Saab is the safest car in Sweden, alone in its class at 40% better than average. The Folksam Institute publishes a biennial study where they compare injury rates to estimated crash severity ... this is the most rigorous "safety" rating in the world!
Consumers Reports rates Saab at "better than average", Volvo S80 doesn't rate that well, IIRC. In the latest JD Power survey on long term reliability, the only two European brands that did better than Saab were Porsche (best in show for manufacturer), and (who'd a thought it possible!) Jaguar. Saab was essentially even with BMW (beat them by a couple of points.) **Every Other European Brand** including Volvo, VW, Audi, Benz, and Land Rover (did I get them all?) were below average.
As for holding its value ... no one's used cars do any more. If you want something that "holds its value", buy a Certified Used 3 year old car.
