Are you suggesting that there is too much VI (vicosity index improver) in a group III 5W50?
Some synthetics achieve their VI range by virtue of blending different synthetic base stocks and don't have any conventional VI additives. I have not read definatively that this is not true of FakeTek(tm) and other group III oils. I would assume so.
I assume that your VII is VI Improver, not a group VII oil ?:)
So perhaps the 5W40 Rotella Synthetic grp III DH diesel oil would be a good way to go. That oil is designed to deal with some condtions that are more severe that a gasser or turbo gasser. In some ways a turbo gasser operated in North America probably presents less of a challege for engine oil than a NA high performance engine. The NA engine has a higher compression ratio and higher temperatures for most operating conditions. Turbos are lower compression and on boost for typically only a few seconds at a time. When on boost the mixture is rich and the timing is delayed quite a bit compared to a NA HP engine. So I would not be surprised if NA HP engines ran hotter. And the destiny of many 2.3L NA's certainly does not conflict with that. - very sad outcome Perhaps it was a mistake to not have the oil cooler on the turbo's on the NA's. The turbos have harger capacity oil pumps too for obvious reasons, but perhaps the oil pressures (from the relief valve) are higher as well.
Meanwhile many newer engines are spec'd for 0W40 G-IV. I will get around to running Delvac 1 5W40 in my Aero some day. I have it on hand for the 97 Passat TDI anyways. It was a fantastic oil in my 95SET. So far its M1 5W40.
