My mileage is not dissimilar. I've noticed a 3mpg variation winter (worse) to summer (best) over an identical highway course (I-94/196, Gary IN to Holland MI). Never seen better than 30 mpg above 67 mph. Worst was approx 19 with a lot of stop/go in the western Chicago 'burbs.
Stock stereo system is very good, far better than the Bimmers I tested. High end lacks precise definition and is just a bit weak. Bass is very good considering the inherent physical limitations of speaker sizes (6x9 max). I installed the Infinity Kappa 32.5CFs today in the L/R dash positions and will perform crossover capacitorectomies next weekend to clean them up (hopefully).
FM "issue" is not in the car. If you're not listening to a well-funded, non-commercial, classical or jazz FM, virtually anything could be going on at the station end. Most commercial stations' dynamic audio processing boxes can (and do) twist the audio into whatever "sound signature" pleases the program director's and/or general manager's ego. The "me too" tendency causes bad sound of one, highly-rated station to be emulated by others in some markets. (Yes, I work in the broadcast biz and know this stuff firsthand.) All audio judgements should be based upon CDs.
