As a precaution to others, here is what happened.

SID was working at 70% efficiency level, 2+ vertical bars missing impacting the temperature readout and radio band, vertical bars missing from Date and Radio frequency readout, segments and/or entire digits missing from clock readout.

Could not remove SID from dash using reader recommended methods.

WIS says to remove radio unit first, then push SID out from behind.

Radio removal requires DIN remover tool. Found web site that recommended either WalMart at $3.96 or make your own. Made my own, screwed up the spring latching mechanism (discovered later), and radio still wouldn't budge.

Trip to WalMart for DIN remover. Tried these and still wouldn't budge. Problem was result of my previous attempt and rounded grooves in inexpensive WalMart tool.

Filed a sharp edge notch in DIN remover and presto!, radio out. Fixed spring clips before I replaced the radio too.

Still couldn't get SID out of dash. It finally came out after nearly an hour of fighting with it. It is a force fit into the dash opening and is EXTREMELY tight on my car.

Removed cover from SID, trickier than self-help instructions make it sound. Also requires a very tiny Torx driver (smaller than T15), luckily one is in the trunk.

Removed front display from circuit board and OH NO! PVC ribbon cable tore loose from circuit display an 90% of its length. I was certain I was being very careful. This cable is only glued on to the circuit board. The failing adhesive is what was giving me display problems and resulted in it separating from the board with very little force.

Attempted to reattach the ribbon cable with electrical tape, it looked good so I finished the rest of the self-help repair.

My SID is now only a dozen points of light, no usable information at all.

Be VERY CAREFUL when lifting the display off the circuit board. There is no surplus length of cable and the weak adhesive will easily fail.

Now for a new SID.

Removed
