Transmission can only be repaired by removing it from car. A number of years ago, GM abandoned the concept of dealership mechanics repairing automatic transmissions for the Chevy thru Cadillac line-up, maybe it is the same for Saab. Instead, Dealers are instructed to remove the trans, ship it to an authorized rebuilder, and install a re-manufactured transmission.
The price you were quoted sounds like an all new unit, not re-manufactured. The rebuilders are outfits that perform only that function withall the appropriate tools, parts, and test equipment on hand. Their quality is as high as original factory specifications. Dealership repairs were notoriously poor quality simply because they didn't always have the specialized tools and equipment necessary, plus they didn't do it very often to gain the experience factor.
