Anotehr thought - comment about the auto (+) Posted by MisplacedYankee [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: he who hesitates... an update on the Aero, eric strauss, Thu, 31 Jul 2003 15:43:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Have you gotten a really good chance to drive the auto and push the automatic?? I have been driving a 03 Linear loaner for the past month with the 5 spd automatic and as a 5spd manual diehard myself I wouldn't get this automatic unless I was just going to drop it in "Drive" and go. Here are my thoughts:
1) Manual shift is only on steering wheel - I would like something down by the shifter. The paddles are nice, but if you are a 5spd driver you will still likely look for something by the shifter.
2) Unlike the Audi tiptronic system, if you put the Saab in manual mode and just put the foot to the floor and let the car shift at redline the Saab gives you a _very_ rough shift. The Audi tiptronic provides a nice smooth shift at redline. This to me is really bothersome and needs to be changed.
3) For any performance out of the tranny you need to be in "Sport" mode - any time you move the lever it moves you out of Sport mode - a little annoying - wish you could default to "Sport" mode.
4) MPG - Not sure here...My 5spd aero gets better gas mileage than the Linear in Sport mode driving the way I normally do - its about a 2-3 mpg difference. One thing to keep in mind is that the aero has 12K miles and the linear has 3500 - that might account for some of the difference.
So...those are my thoughts. If I was to buy an auto I would have wanted someone to provide me that information so I could make a decision. The Saab auto is one of the best shifting 5spd stand-alone "drop it in drive" automatics. Much better than the tiptronic -- but the manual mode needs some work. I know you are a 5spd manual type guy so you might want to consider this....Plus you can save $1K on the price;)
Hope that helps.
