I am using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my 1998 900SET 5-door automatic. I started using it at 10,000 miles and now have 40,000 miles. I have experienced no problems at all. My shifts are crisp and clean, no hesitation. However, I did NOT notice any obvious change from the stock ATF fluid. My reason for changing to Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF was to prevent any damage to the automatic transmission due to the break down of the conventional fluid.
Reading the recommended change intervals for my NG900, Saab recommends 60,000 miles ATF changes EXCEPT for severe driving the recommended ATF change interval is 20,000 miles. Severe driving is defined as 'stop and go' city driving, driving in a hot environment, towing, or basically any driving other than easy highway miles.
A 'normal' ATF service drains approx. 3.5 quarts of the 7 quarts of ATF (the other 3.5 quarts is held in the torque converter) and cleaning the trnasmission screen. I had the 'normal' ATF change done with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF at 10,000 miles, 15,000 miles, and again at 35,000 miles (the major services for the 1998 900SET are at 35,000; 65,000; 95,000; etc. miles). Since Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is fully compatabile with conventional ATF, there has been no problems. I intend to keep changing the ATF with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF at 30,000 mile intervals.
