We drove 18 hours yesterday in our 9-5 wagon (from CO to IL) and our boys, aged 6 and 9 were transfixed with a couple of kids' books on CD. No fighting or whining during the whole time the books were on! We've done this for the last couple years and it works great. We've done the TV/VCR thing in the past when we drove a minivan and that works OK, too. I think video is more fatiguing, though and the audio books work just as good if not better with slightly older children. Also, with the audio books they can still look at the scenery but the required concentration level keeps them quite involved with the story.
For a 2.5 year-old the video may be more appropriate. A co-worker has a self-contained DVD unit that clips to the back of the front seat
