Most MPG motivated people say that you should let your car warm up for only 10 seconds (until oil pressure is up to max), and then drive off at a moderate speed until the engine has warmed up.
The A/C extracts only a 2-3 MPG penalty, when on.
I don't know what the initial load is on compressor startup, but it CAN'T be that much of a strain on the engine!!! Compared to launching a 3400 pound car, the A/C is minimal.
If you are using a decent oil (synthetic!!!!!!!!), and don't "cold-rev" the engine on startup in a way that would cause piston ring oil deprivation, you should be just fine.
the people who get in trouble and score the cylinder walls, are those that use cheap oil that doesn't adhere to the metals, and then they stress the engine immediately after startup before the oil pressure is up to speed.
A bigger problem is found in the drivers who feel the need to "blip the throttle" immediately prior to shutdown, effectively not allowing the cylinders to cool a bit under full oil pressure. (think of your turbo...same thing!)
My engines have ALL gone 200,000 plus miles with these simple rules of startup/shutdown.
Compared to 1970, oil is no longer the weak link in engine life. Personally I think the weak link now is seals.
What do you think of that?
