Black smoke, loss of power and engine shuts down

I bought my 1999 2.3 9-5 October 2002 with 53,000 miles. It quit on me in February 2003. I had the direct ignition unit replaced and it then ran OK. However, I had occasional black smoke on start and under hard acceleration but this latter smoke I thought was accompanied by a "tinny" rattle under the hood. I ignored the problem because the car ran very nicely. Last night I had a major engine failure. Ambient temperatures were about 70 degrees and the AC was engaged. There was a major loss of power and the engine was not responsive. There was no "check engine light". This morning I took it for a test drive and had more problems. There was lots of black smoke, a major loss of power, and repeated engine stalling but no check engine light that I recall. I thought there was an unusual whining noise that increased in pitch as the the throttle was depressed and the engine accelerated. This, I am thinking, is not a happy situation. Can anyone tell me what these problems might be caused by? I have not checked with a dealer to see if the ECU had been replaced under any recall nor any so called "drill-out". I do not know any history about the turbo. I do not know anything about the condition of the wastegate, the electronic throttle, nor a crancshaft sensor. These are all engine parts referred to by participants on this web site. Help would be appreciated.
