Depending upon the location and size of the vacuum leak what you are experiencing is possible due to the way the feedback properties of the engine management system operates; if the vacuum leak was sufficiently large you would most likely trigger a CEL, as conditions would exceed allowable programmed parameters. I recollect that you posted before on pinging, I suspect that there is a sensor(s) or control system(s) in your engine management that is not quite on spec, but not off enough to trigger a fault code. If it bothers you enough, you may find a shop which can thoroughly test the functions of the engine management system, but it would likely be expensive and may not pinpoint the problem. As an example, O2 sensors can be removed and tested for proper voltage output.
