hi everyone,

i bought a 9-5 aero 2000 with under 30k miles last month. brought it home the 24th. took it to the dealer the next day. the in service date was july 2000 so the car should have had the 30k service covered under the warranty.

i went to santa monica saab and talked to the fellow in charge of service there. he told me the earliest they could take the car was august. ok. we decided to get the car serviced today since i was out of town for two weeks in august (although I was in town in july... note again... they did not have any openings in july). i asked if the service would be covered. his reply "covered."

i bring the car in today. this is my first trip to a dealer and i've heard that dealers are always trying to weasel out of stuff so... no surprise i guess when i heard that the car wasn't covered! a number of different excuses came up on his side:

the car was covered when you asked me (yes, but i asked you if the service would be covered AFTER we made the appointment)

i gave you the date the 3 year service warranty expired (no, you didn't, my wife is a witness)

you could have taken it to another dealer (and i would have but you didn't make that suggestion... i brought it to you because you have performed all the service on the car thus far... i would've driven the car to san francisco for the service if need be)

he told me to call saab. the folks at the 800 number seem poorly trained and not helpful. thus far all i've heard is that it's up to me to do it in time. i'm waiting for a response from the supervisor who is, of course, at lunch.

it sounds to me like i'm getting ripped off. any recourse here? this guy seems to be in charge of the service department.
