a Manual Boost Controller (MBC) is a mechanical boost controller that allows you to regulate the boost independant of the ECU. With a T5 ECU (red DI), you can increase boost to around 15 PSI by bypassing the Boost Pressure Control valve (PBC). But that has some other problems that crop up, but otherwise is safe and makes the NG900's and early 9-3's very fast and responsive. You would need to know and do more beforehand. With the 9-5, Vigens and 2000+ 9-3's with the T7 ECUs, you cannot overide the boost pressures by bypassing the BPC.

The modern MBC designs have a ball-spring design that speeds up the onset of boost. You can take one of these and put it in series with the T7's BPC and greatly reduce turbo lag. This can be referred to as a SMBC due to the series install. So thats it in a nutshell. Search for MBC on the NG900, 9-3, 9-5 and performance BBs for more if you like to drink from a firehose.

A SMBC will have some performance characteristics that a modified ECU simply cannot deliver. I think that the two would complement each other greatly. And yes, one can abuse this option but thats not a problem with the technology. And if you adjust it sanely, there are no downsides like a basie MBC install on a T5.

You can get a decent MBC for a bit over $40US. It is a really simple device. You can get some that are pretty and cost $140 with no known advantage.

And I am not suggesting that any of this will work or work well with a V6, but someone with the knowledge could experiment. Its a completely different situation.
