Ten days ago I posted a note about my 99 9-5, and the fact that I could no longer shift down from 3rd to 2nd. Here's what ended up happening. The dealer ended up installing a new 2nd gear, and synchro. That did not do the trick, so they pulled everything again and put in a transmission kit, that Saab corporate suggested. They also replaced the clutch at the same time, which was the only thing I had to pay for under the Certified Used Warranty! :-)
I got the car back yesterday, and it shifts much smoother than before. The clutch is also far more pleasant and easier to modulate. They put in a new synthetic transmission fluid, that is standard issue on 2003, and beyond Saabs. All in all, I could not be more delighted.
I want to say again how impressed I am with Zimbrick Saab in Madison, WI. The service adviser is awesome, and retentive about making sure you are a satisfied customer. The technician gave me a tour of my transmission last week, when it was out of the car, and explained how/why everything works, and what was causing my problems.
They took it upon themselves to replace a couple of vacuum hoses, because they felt the car was running rough at idle when they test drove it (I didn't notice, but it does seem very smooth now!). And, they detailed the car before returning it,because it was in the shop for two weeks!
The whole time, they had me in a 2003 9-5 loaner car -- free of charge.
All in all, a great experience, though unfortunate for Saab Corporate!
