Hesitation, then intense rattle

I was driving my 2000 Aero automatic today in the heat...and when going to merge on the freeway at about 50mph, I floor it to send the tranny down to 2nd. It seemed to stop on third gear for a second and hesitate pretty bad. It could have been in 2nd and I didnt realize it, but either way there was virtually no acceleration for about 3 seconds. I was trying to get it to do it again, and when I did it again, instead of hesitating, it made this horrible rattling noise like bolts in a coffee cup being tossed around when it shifted to second from fourth. These 2 symptoms could be stemming from totally seperate issues. Any ideas?
Thanks
