Troubleshooting help - car wouldn't start (long)

So the wife, lab puppy and I go out to get ice cream last night in our '00 9-5 LPT. 65 degrees, dry...generally a nice night. Drive about 20 minutes (mixed highway/secondary) to ice cream place. Get ice cream, sit on back tailgate with hatch open (lights on) and eat ice cream. When we get in the car it will turn over very well but won't catch. I try this for a couple of minutes intermittently and the start on the "call AAA and find a local indy who can help routine". As I am doing this I open the hood and check obvious things (DI connected, battery well connected, etc) and leave the hood open.
Long story short...after about 15 min of intermittent attempts the car finally starts. And has been starting ever since (last night a couple of times and this morning).
Only items to note - new tank of gas on Fri afternoon (93 octane Sunoco) and the weather has gone from incredibly hot and humid to more normal and dry in Boston. I wasn't running the AC for the first time in a long time last night. I can't relate either of these things to the cause but thought I would mention them.
I am wondering if anyone has any idea what this could be. I normally wouldn't worry to much but the car is about to head to Northern Maine for a spell and getting stuck up there would be more than a brief headache.
Is this an intermittent DI cassette issue? Did leaving the hood open and cooling off engine solve the problem? Any data points would be helpful...
Regards,
PLC
