the adventures of a 2 saab family (long)
---------------------------------
friday night: the wife and i are driving back from sox park (it was elvis night) in her 2001 lpt certified wagon (~30k mi), and the "service engine" light came on.
she ran fine, and we continued home without any problems. the engine tends to "surge" a little bit when idling on a hot day, so i assumed it was probably related to that. i figure i'll start her up on saturday am and see if the light is still on.
saturday: start wagon, light still on. call roadside assistance--tell them what happened. i asked the rep if i should just drive it to the dlr, and she told me that they'd pick it up. apparently, if there's a problem on the weekend, they tow to a storage facility, then deliver to the dlr on monday. we decided that the car was safer in my garage until monday, and she made arrangements for the tow on monday morning.
monday: after calling to confirm the tow, a truck arrives at 8:30 am. it's to be taken to the saab exchange in lake bluff (40 miles away). i call the saab exchange to let them know it will be coming, and they tell me that it's a "light" day, so it will be fixed today. at 3:30 pm, i call the exchange to determine if it will be ready--i'm on hold for a couple of minute, then i'm told that THE CAR WAS NEVER DELIVERED. they call the other chicago area saab dealers--no car anywhere.
i called roadside assistance, and am told that they'll find my car. this, of course isn't good enough for me, so i call my wife to get the number off of the receipt that the tow driver gave her--she tells me that THERE'S NO RECEIPT. at this point i'm imagining my wife's wagon in a chop shop on the south side.
finally, RA calls back--the tow truck broke down, and my car is on the side of the edens expressway. now, this doesn't explain the whereabouts of my car for 7 hours, but at least i know where it is.
the saab exchange was VERY helpful, and had enterprise deliver a car to use--it's a 2004 Grand Prix. has anyone been in one of these things? it's like a spaceship in there. plastic, plastic, plastic as far as the eye can see. they couldn't decide on a design standard, so they decided to just put EVERYTHING on the dash, no matter how it looks. anyhow, i'm truly grateful that they gave me a car without even asking, but WOW does GM have design issues.
tuesday: as i'm leaving for work, i cannot find the key to my car (9-5 sedan)--my wife has taken my car and left me with the spaceship, even though it's her car that's sick.
confirmed with the exchange that the car arrived safely and she's being attended to.
at least the white sox won on friday night . . .
