some easy items:
-plugs and gap ?deposits?
-fouled fuel injectors
-combustion chamber deposits that great hot spots and increase octane requirements
-restrictive air filter
-fuel
-DI might be acting up, of 80K on the original, well over due for a spare!
Install new plugs and gap to .035"
Use Techron Concentrate, two treated tanks if never used before
New air filter perhaps
What fuel is been used. Highest pump gas octane available? Avoid fuels promoted as ethanol blends. 10% ethanol will reduce power and increase consumption. So the cost at the pump might really be 5% higher because more is used.
Is a true synthetic oil been used? If using dyno, the piston rings could be sticking. Any oil consuption to report? With the Saab dip sticks it is perhaps impossible to judge that.
As for lost power, there could be boost leak. Check the BPV. The BPVs should last a long time in this application, as the ECU controls vac and pressure to the BPV via a valve. The BPV does not have any vacuum applied to it at engine idle. So the diaphragm probably spends little time sujected to +ve or -ve pressure. But a BPV malfunction would be minor, as the ECU will cel for serious BPV leak such as the VAC line comming off.
If the above does not help, one can try a test tank of octane enhanced fuel to see if the engine responds better to that. Off the shelf octane boosters are not a good solution. Toluene works well. Perhaps 2 or 3 quarts in a tank of fuel (17 gallons).
