Although Saab did make several structural changes, I believe the change that caused the greatest improvement in ratings was a breakaway accelerator pedal. For years Saab has had breakaway brake pedals, because they figured during an accident you're probably in the process of braking and the pedal should snap if the forces on your leg get too high. IIHS performs test with the right foot on the accelerator pedal, which really doesn't make much sense but that's the test. I believe there was intrusion into the right portion of the footwell and combined with the non-breakaway pedal in the '99 '00 and '01 this was causing some right foot injuries. They improved the structure somehow and added a breakaway pedal and that removed the only blemish on their crash test ratings.
Anyone know if the pedal is a replaceable part, or upgradable to the new type?
