I have always had trouble getting my 1999 5 speed in reverse. One trick that seems to help(sometimes) is to turn off the ignition then place the car in reverse. It just slips right in when the engine is shut down which makes me wonder if the clutch is not completely disengaging when the pedal is depressed. I also use your method of letting the car roll backwards a little. The problem is annoying.
