And now I can name names....I bought a 99 Viggen from the Saab Exchange in Chicago. Those idiots clearly never did the 101 point inspection which was dumb by them because they missed out on a lot of warranty work that they could have been paid for. I flew 900 miles and had another 1000 mile drive home to pick up this car. I pointed out several things that they never mentioned (minor -- I am anal after all) and the car had a horrible shimmy (bent rims of course). This did happen on the test drive with the salesman in the car. No room to negotiate (it was a good price) and it was a CPO so I drove home (I had gone to Florida the week before and came home with no car so my wife would have divorced me if I drove back another rental).

Ok. Long drive home the car makes it, but not without both windshield wipers popping off in a bad thunderstorm -- the idiots never put them on correctly. Boy was I mad (and wet). Red Flags are flying.

Upon close inspection I find the following:

- Rotors that were said to be 70% and 80% useful life had 10% to 50% front and rear respectively – far below standards of 60% and also an outright misrepresentation on the signed 110-point inspection sheet
- Brake pads put on upside down, rears at 50% or less – below standards and unsafe
- 2 bent beyond repair rims with a noticeable driveline vibration
- Serious suspension chatter and issues
- No refurbishment complete – bumper not connected, multiple deep scratches, corroded components, and other visible damage
- Driver’s seat belt that didn’t operate correctly – potentially unsafe
- Very dirty engine and poor vehicle preparation (enough though to hide some damage)
- AC Tube loose and rattling on intake
- fogged headlight
- Front mesh damaged and paint flaking
- Passenger side bumper clips missing and front wheel well liner is broken causing bumper not to be attached correctly.
- Turbo Boost not right
- Sticky 4th gear
- Bad door ding fix
- Spoiler rattle (know service bulletin on Viggen)

Most got fixed under warranty, but I had to threaten lawsuits on the rotors, pad, rims, headlight, and mesh/bumper fix. To Saab Exchange's only credit they did cover the rotors, rims, and pads. They did the big ticket items to shut me up and told me I had too good of a deal on the car so shove the rest. It was a lovely experience.

Well OK I can deal with it all at this point. Everything on that list either got paid for by Saab Exchange, fixed under warranty, or I fixed it myself with the exception of a repainted front bumper that I paid the dealer to fix because I wanted the car too look new. The only open item is the bad ding job fix which isn't easy to see except to me. I will wait until some real dings make it to the door before I get that fixed.

So...Don't take a CPO car as "good as new" -- I have heard several stories similar to mine -- luckily I made my complaints very quickly and had a second dealer (local dealer in Dallas) verify everything. That worked to my advantage to getting these things resolved. Of course if I lived there I would have made them fix all that stuff before I bought the car or they might have said forget it after the money they spent fixing it + the deal I got as I am sure they are underwater on that car.

I have an 11 page document I sent to Saab with the full story + all the repair work done. They didn't care at all -- even spoke to the executive office about it and nada -- oh well my typical customer service expectations were low -- even as a person who has bought 3 Saabs now and likely will continue to buy Saabs.

Good luck. Act quick and keep the faith. Email me if you have any questions. I am still getting some of the suspension gremlins worked out as we speak, but once they are fixed my Viggen (See Link) is as good as new so it all worked out in the end:-)
