good ears. There were times that I thought I heard the turbo in my 9000 Aero but it turned out to be ignition whine from my radio that had a case of bad ground. The 9-5 turbo sits at the same place as the 9000 engine; if anything, it has that extra heat shield on top of it to cut down the noise even further.

How can one tell it is from the turbo ? The thing is on far the side of the engine and even with the windows open, it is way way far ahead and to the right of the driver seat. I can hear the whine from the AC, from the transmission (auto), and various belts and pulleys running but I have no clue what the turbo sounds like. Come to think of it, I don't even recall hearing the hissing from turbo boost valve from the 9-5 (my 1995 9K valve makes such a loud hiss that people think I am driving a diesel big rig).

I guess I could make some guesses on the possible frequency of the turbine turning. Suppose the turbo has 6 blades (??), and the turbine is turning at 2000 RPM (??) at idle, so we are talking about 6*2000/60 = 200 Hz. At driving speed, the turbo maybe turning at 10,000 RPM so I would be hearing something like 1KHz. At warp speed, I would guess it is feasible to have the little thing turning at 100,000 RPM so I would hear 10KHz. So I guess it is all in the audible range.

However, the question is what is the turbo noise level compare to the noise the engine and other turning things in the engine bay make ? My guess is that other mechanical noise would simply overwhelm what little noise coming out of that tiny turbine unless a couple of the blades are not in balance or the turbo is failing.

Maybe those who think they can hear the turbo would kindly let me in on your secret ?
