We had a similar delima but ended up buying a 2002 Aero with 6K miles on it for about the price that you mention. That was last year. It's getting it's 20K service today so we have a 2003 Linear wagon as a loaner. Here are my impressions on the differences;

1) Aero engine is smoother. Both are the 2.3 however so I'm not sure why.
2) You don't noticed the difference in power and/or handling unless you push it. That's quite nice.
3) The 2003 Linear is SO much better than the base model in 2000, probably due the small increase in power and the fact that in 2002, it got the old Aero's suspension.
4) The sntronic auto is rather gimmicky but nice to have if you live in a hilly area or if you really wanted a manual but need an auto for some other reason.
5) I like the silver dash of the Aero better than the wood now. It grew on me quickly.
6) I'm quietly considering a 9-5 Linear to replace my 99 9-3. It's slower but it's so much better in so many ways.
