I am a sucker for a new car each year...I owned a 2002 Aero sedan and test drove the V70 R sedan. All I can say is that the V70 R AWD was a let down. I read so much about it I thought it would blow me away and I would be sure to trade my aero for one -- No way -- Something about it just wasn't inspiring -- It didn't handle very well - felt like it had too much roll to it and the steering didn't feel balanced. The 6 speed was nice, but looked like a silver ice cream cone. For the extra cost of ownership of the V70R wagon or sedan I would never do it.
Reliability is also a factor. I am the lone wolf of the family driving Saabs, but the rest of my family drives Volvos. We all came from VWs and crummy american cars. My sister went thru 2 90's in 2 years -- both had constant problems. She now has a Xcountry wagon as does my Dad and it has been hit or miss. My cousin has a older 80 and that thing is a living nightmare. People always used to tell me I was going to have a Saab(Sob) Story with my Saabs and I haven't had one real issue yet nor have I ever been stranded like my sister has 4 times (knock on wood).
Just some more food for thought -- Also the Aero Wagon has better interior space than the Volvo wagon IMHO and think it even measures that way, but not sure. The Volvo seats are excellent - When I am in town I like crusing around in the Xcountry just for the comfy seats.
