Oops! Wrong tires. (Long)

Well, after 44,000 miles and a sudden increase in noise, I decided to replace my OEM Michelin Pilot HX MXMs. These tires have been much maligned on this board and weren't endorsed by the guy at Tirerack.
When shopping for a tire, I did the usual all-season/summer tire balancing test. Obviously a little more "go in the snow" is always nice. (The Michelins were terrible in this department.) Based on various reviews, I decided to go with the Pirelli P Zero Neros. According to what I read, they were quiet, smooth and, at the same time, sporty. Since the OEM Michelins were thought to be so bad, I figured that, while gaining better snow traction, I wouldn't be losing much, if anything, in handling/road feel. Boy was I wrong.
The Pirellis are quiet and the ride is smooth, but turn in is "spongey" and slow. I haven't played with the tire pressure yet, and the tires haven't been broken in, but right now I'm very disappointed. The Neros have taken the "sport" out of my sports sedan. Sigh... Well, it's the Michelin Pilot Sports now or in the springtime, depending on when I want to put out the additional cash. Anyone wanna buy some Pirellis?
