Yes, I do like my current phone location. I originally used to keep my phone in the ashtray pocket, but the reception was not that good (although my phone has a short internal antenna only), and the phone was causing a static noise in the stereo when the conversation was on. Also it used to pop out of the ashtray in the sharp turns, but that's a different story ;). With the new location the reception has improved, there's no static, and the visibility is great also.
Speaking of your phone, doesn't VX4400 have an external display on its outer shell and voice dialing? With these features you can keep it closed and still take and receive calls, so nothing prevents you from mounting it on top of the console. I don't know if this model supports stereo mute, but I suppose you can google this information easily.
